Green Tea seems to have become uber fashionable at the moment with fitness and diet experts recommending it for both its super-dooper range of antioxidants and its sterling work at increasing metabolic function: basically helping you burn more fat. But is it really the wonder drink we are all told it is?
Well, actually , yes. Here's the deal.
Green Tea helps you burn more fat: green tea contains an antioxidant
called - wait for it - epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG. EGCG stimulates
the nervous system, releasing fat into the bloodstream which the body then uses
as fuel. EGCG is also thought to help fight cancers.
Green Tea can help ward off diabetes: the polyphenols in green tea inhibit the body's production of amylase, the enzyme used by the body to break down simple sugars. As such less sugar is absorbed into bloodstream which can help lead to lower blood sugar and therefore reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Green Tea can help fight bad breath: when drank with food the antibacterial properties in green tea could help to fight oral bacteria that can cause a bad breath. Result!
Green Tea can help lower cholesterol: antioxidants in green tea can inhibit the build up of LDL cholesterol (the bad one) in the arteries helping to lower LDL levels and with it the risk of heart disease.
Green tea is a fantastic way of gaining numerous health benefits simple by having a cup of tea. With a grassy, green-ish flavour for some it is an acquired taste but, you can get green teas flavoured with the likes of lemon, jasmine and peppermint so, there's bound to be one that suits.
For me, I generally drink normal pure green tea, brewed quite strongly in a porcelain cup. And I always always make sure I drink Clipper Tea if I can, Not only do they taste great but the don't bleach their tea bags meaning no nasty chemicals in your cuppa!
