Unless
you have been living under a rock for the past six months, you will already
know that Chia Seeds are the lastest health craze sweeping across the what
seems like the entire world just now. They are seriously everywhere.
And I have a confession to make. I'm on it. I have totally jumped
head first onto the Chia Seed bandwagon!
Not sure what I'm talking about? Basically, Chia Seeds are the latest hot-topic in the healthy eating world and I love them every morning sprinkled over my porridge, fruit & yoghurt.
Here's why:
THEY
ARE A COMPLETE PROTEIN - Chia seeds are a fantastic source of Protein -
essential for tissue maintenanace and repair - packing a whopping 3g per
tablespoon (that's a lot). They are a great choice for vegetarians or
even those looking to reduce their consumption of animal proteins.
THEY ARE A GREAT SOURCE OF OMEGA 3 & 6 (ESSENTIAL FATS!) - packing even more Omega 3 than salmon, Chia Seeds provide a good old portion of essential fatty acids which are vital for building healthy cells and keeping nerve function in tip-top condition. Omega fatty acids are increasingly thought to provide numerous health benefits including helping to like lower blood pressure and cholesterol; reduce the risk of heart disease and help with depression and mood disorders to name a few.
THEY BOOST HYDRATION LEVELS - these magic litte seeds can hold up to twelve times their weight in water making them really beneficial for boosting and maintaining hydration levels. Great mixed with liquid as pre or post workout energy drink.
THEY DON'T TASTE OF ANYTHING! - this may sounds like an odd kind of benefit but for those who struggle with certain kinds of so-called health foods because of the taste, the fact that chia seeds really don;t taste of anything is a big plus! They won't add a taint or flavour to any meal and yet add so many nutritional benefits. They are fantastic sprinkled over a salad or in some fruit and yoghurt.
If you fancy introducing Chia Seeds to your diet these recipes are a great place to start! I would love some recommendations too!

I have thought for a while about trying them but as I have Crohn's I am never sure whether I could cope with them. I might risk it sometime as I've been hearing great things about them for ages. It's always great to get new idea's of how to incorporate them into meals.
