The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods – A Heartwarming Book Review for Bibliophiles
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Looking for a book that blends mystery, magic, and a deep love for literature? The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods is a must-read for book lovers everywhere.
If you believe stories find us when we need them most then The Lost Bookshop by Evie Woods might just be the book you are looking for. It is an absolute must read for people who love literature, books and a little bit of magic.
Set between modern-day Dublin and 1920s London, Dublin and Paris, The Lost Bookshop weaves together the lives of Opaline, Martha, and Henry. Each are facing their own struggles (and pasts) - and searching for something more than what the world seems to have given them.
Blending historical fiction, contemporary mystery, and a sprinkling of magical realism, this is a beautifully written novel which serves up a real heartfelt and immersive experience. I read it in two days and genuinly felt - in the moments of quiet consideration that belies the space between reading one book and another - that this book could easily have been developed into a much larger series or trilogy such was the promise of its places, people and subtext! There are times within the story when aspects of the plot race on ahead and when the author appears to really revel in her knowledge of literary figures with something akin to a history lesson but this aspect only added to its charm as a book for book lovers everywhere.
The Lost Bookshop is heartwarming, a little magical, and filled with quiet unanswered questions that linger long after the final page. It is a story that keeps you wondering about what really became of its inspiring female leads with an overarching theme of the overcoming of the dominance of the traditional male voice. Woods actively challenges the often uncomfortable realities of the silencing of female narratives and voices of the past.
This isn't a sad or heavy book to read however. Woods' storytelling brings together important topics but the thread of magical realism running throughout the entire plot gives the reader a sense that everything will work out alright. It is a narrative that celebrates not only survival and courage but books, writers, literature, manuscripts and the very act of reading and writing - not just for their own sake but as a lifeline and a connection to the people, places and comfort that they inevitably bring us to.
Why you’ll love this book and why The Lost Bookshop stands out:
A unique blend of genres– part historical fiction, part modern-day mystery, with a gentle touch of magic.
A hidden bookshop as a metaphor for healing, hope, and unexpected new beginnings. A place of coming together of hearts and minds.
Emotionally rich characters who are flawed, relatable, and easy to root for.
A love letter to literature– perfect for anyone who finds comfort in the pages of a good book. Woods clearly loves literature and literary figures and it shows through the entire novel.
