PLAY // ALPHABLOCK STEW

I'm not usually a one to buy the kids magazines (preferring to buy books instead) but when I saw these little letter tiles with the Alphablocks magazine in our local supermarket this week I quickly snapped them up.

Already, our girls (one an emerging reader and one a beginner) have had so much play value out of what are effectively small cardboard tiles that you can use like Scrabble pieces to make words, except in this case in the guise of the Alphablock characters that they know so well.

Their favourite game - Alphablock stew, where you place all the tiles in a big bowl, give each player a spoon, and then see who, in a race against the clock, can make the most words from the tiles that they have, one by one, scooped out.  As you would expect, our 4 year old needed help with this but I was astounded at how much excitied whooping filled the room as the alarm on my phone sounded signalling  each time the end of a round.

As the game went on our 7 year olds confidence to try new letter combinations and make longer words grew and our 4 year old who is only brand new to phonics found it easier to recognise her sounds more quickly.  And above all - it was such great fun - they didn't even know they were learning at all!

If you see these on sale, I think they make such a great resource to have in your kitchen cupboard at home!  They would also make a great camping game and popped in a little drawstring bag or tin are super light and portable.

They are also available online here. (No ads or paid link - I just think they are fab!)
